Fra Plato: Complete Works:
Protagoras: 350a – 360e
Republic, Book IX
Gorgias: 481d - 506a
Philebus: 31d – 52b
Laws, Book II
Time permitting, we will visit small sections of Plato’s Phaedo as well as Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics.
The students should have access to:
1. John M Cooper: Plato: Complete works, Hackett, 1997
2. Terence Irwin, Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics, 2nd edition, Hackett, 2000.
Though the focus is chiefly on the passages specified in the syllabus, students are advised to familiarize themselves with larger sections of the dialogues to which these passages belong, and preferably the whole of the Protagoras, Gorgias and the Philebus from 31d to the end. They are also advised, strongly, to do so as soon as possible.
