FIL4400 ¨C Philosophy of Language/Logic

Course content

The focus of the course may vary from one year to another, but it will be based on current central problems within the philosophy of language and the philosophical aspects of logic. The seminar will be based on philosophical texts; current relevant articles as well as original texts.

Learning outcome

The aim is to give students an in depth knowledge of a specific topic in the philosophy of language or logic. Through active participation in class, students will develop the ability to express themselves in academic forms, and give qualified contributions within this specific field.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching

24 hours of combined seminars and lectures. The course will run over 6 weeks with two double sessions per week.

The course has the following compulsory activities:

• An oral presentation in class during the seminar.
• Two short commentaries (1-2 pages) on the readings.

These activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to have the right to hand in the final term paper. The activities are closely connected to the teaching, and are therefore only valid the semester they are completed.

Examination

A term paper of 10 pages (one page should contain approximately 2.300 characters), excl. bibliography. The topic must be approved of by the responsible teacher. You submit your essays in Inspera.?

When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. However, this requires that you submit a draft to your teacher. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory activities must be approved by the teacher.

Evaluation criteria fall 2018.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
