FIL4110 – Metaphysics/Philosophy of Mind with short essay

Course content

The content of the course may vary from year to year, but it will be based on current central problems within metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. The seminar will be based on philosophical texts, current relevant research articles and original texts.

Learning outcome

The aim is to give students an in depth knowledge of a specific topic in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. Through active participation in class and writing of an essay, students will develop the ability to express themselves in academic forms, both orally and in writing.

Admission

Only master degree students can formally enroll, and take the course for credit.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Teaching takes place throughout the semester with two hours per week. Active participation from the students in the form of written presentations throughout the seminar is expected.

Examination

A 4-hours school exam and a short essay of approximately 10-15 pages. The topic of the essay must be approved of by the responsible teacher.

When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. However, this requires that you submit a draft to your teacher. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
