FIL4010 – Special Topics in Philosophy

Course content

FIL4010 is a code used when seminars are offered that are not a part of our regular courses. Content and form of teaching may vary from one semester to another.

Learning outcome

The aim is to give students an in depth knowledge of a specific topic within within different philosophical fields. Through the writing of an essay, students will develop the ability to express themselves in academic forms.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching

Minimum 10 double sessions of seminars. See the semester pages for further information.

Spring 2018 the course has the following two compulsory tuition activities:

  • An oral comment on an article
  • An oral presentation of the draft for the term paper

All compulsory tuition activities must be completed and accepted as satisfactory in order to qualify for the final exam.

Examination

The form of examination may vary from one semester to another, but it will most likely be a term paper, a take home exam or a portofolio exam. In rare cases it can be a school exam.

Spring 2018 the exam will be a term paper of approximately 10 pages à 2300 characters, footnotes and literature list not included. The paper is to be submitted in Canvas.

When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. However, this requires that you submit a draft to your teacher. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

All compulsory tuition acitivities must be completed to be able to sit the exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
