Course content
The main focus of this course will be on works/epochs/schools/ideas in the history of philosophy from the 17th century until the 19th century. Important names here are Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz, Berkeley and Hume within the filed of metaphysics and epistemology; Hobbes, Grotius, Locke, Hume, Smith og Kant within ethics and political philosophy.
Learning outcome
After having completed the course, the students are expected to:
- have a good knowledge of the core texts for the course
- have a certain knowledge of the debate concerning the topic
- be able to discuss the topic in a rather independent and critical manner
- be able to describe in a consistent and clear manner what are the main aspects of the topic

Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with FIL4600 – History of Philosophy 1600-1800.
- 5 credits overlap with FIL2500 – Fordypning - Filosofihistorie (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with FIL2501 – Fordypning - Filosofihistorie (discontinued).
Teaching
12 double sessions with seminars. The teaching takes place together with students in FIL4600.The course has the following compulsory tuition activities:
- Mandatory presence and active participation at the seminars (you must be present at least 9 out of 12 times unless you have a valid reason and can provide documentation).
All compulsory tuition activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to qualify for the final exam. The activities are only valid for one semester.

Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
A semester essay of approximately 10 pages à 2.300 characters, excl. bibliography. You submit your essay in Inspera.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.

Language of examination
You may write in English or Norwegian as you prefer.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
