FIL2209 – Theory of Knowledge
Course description
Course content
Epistemology is the study of the nature of knowledge, justification, and the rationality of belief. The course discusses selected problems within the field of epistemology. The exact topic of the course may vary from one semester to another. But may include, for example:
- self-knowledge
- epistemology of disagreement
- epistemology of ignorance
- epistemology of science
- feminist epistemology
Learning outcome
After having completed the course you should be able to:

document an in depth knowledge of particular topics in epistemology

demonstrate an ability to analyse, compare and contrast different philosophical positions within the area of specialization

discuss and explore some central problems within epistemology, and raise philosophical questions related to these topics
-
write argumentative texts analyzing different views and to argue for a position on some particular problems in the area of specialization

Teaching
12 double sessions which will be a combination of seminars and lectures. Active participation is expected.
Examination
A term paper of 10-12 pages (one page should contain approximately 2300 characters), literature list and footnotes not included. You submit the term paper in Inspera within the given deadline. Supervision will be given.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
