Examination
The exam for the seminar variant is a 2,5 hour home exam where you: i) upload your term paper, and ii) answer exam questions. The exam takes place in Inspera.
- You are permitted to use examination support material during the exam. It may be considered cheating/attempted cheating if you submit an exam paper that includes longer text excerpts generated by a language model, such as ChatGPT.
- To pass the exam as a whole, both parts of the exam must be marked with a passing grade. The grade weighting of the exam is ca. 60% term paper and ca. 40% exam questions.
Both the term paper and exam questions must be submitted digitally in Inspera. You will receive further information before the exam. Read more about how you submit a home exam in Inspera.
It is important that you know the rules for use of sources and referencing:

Guidelines for the home exam
Term paper
The term paper is an argumentative text. You have submitted an earlier version of this text as the second obligatory assignment. It is expected that you have reworked the text based on your seminar teacher's comments before submitting the text as a part of the home exam.
Candidate number and exam submission
- Upload the term paper in PDF-format. See how to submit file upload.
- Remember that your submission should be anonymous. Do not write your name.
- Write your candidate number in the top of the term paper. You can find your candidate number in Studentweb.
Length and font
- The text should be between 800 and 1000 words.
- Write your candidate number, word count, assignment number and assignment description at the top of your assignment. The word count includes references in brackets and footnotes, but not the literature list and assignment description/question.
- Use a clear and legible font. We recommend using Times New Roman, 12 point with 1 ? line spacing.
Independence and relevance
- The text you submit must be your own work.
- The text must be a response to one of the assignments you have been given in your seminar group.
- It is not permitted to collaborate on the assignment with other students.
- If you generate all or part of your term paper using artificial intelligence, ChatGPT and the like, it may be considered cheating.
Academic integrity: references and literature list
- When you cite or quote from external sources (facts, arguments, claims), you must provide appropriate references (citations) to these sources. This applies both when you quote (reproducing verbatim), and when you reproduce in your own words.
- References should be included in brackets, or as footnotes/endnotes.
- The requirement for appropriate references applies to all sources that you use: original texts from the syllabus, commentaries from the syllabus, textbooks, study guides, websites, lecture notes, etc.
- Verbatim reproduction of text must be highlighted as a quote.
- Your term paper must include a literature list with all sources used.
- It is important that you know the rules for use of sources and referencing. Missing references may lead to suspicion of plagiarism. Please use UiO's "Use of sources and citations" and The Faculty of Humanities' "Sources and referencing".
A failure to meet the following formal criteria may lead to a submission being graded as F ("Fail"), even if other components are satisfactory. These criteria are:
- When the student makes no direct/specific reference to the text from the syllabus, either through paraphrase or citation/quotation.
- When the student fails to include a literature list.
- When the text does not meet the length requirements (shorter than 800 words, or longer than 1000 words).
Exam questions
The exam questions are based on the syllabus and are intended to provide a broad check of the students' knowledge.
Candidate number and exam submission
- You must answer the exam questions directly in the text tool in Inspera. Please see more information on long form assignments in Inspera.
- You do not need to write your candidate number in your answer to the exam questions.
- Do not write your name.
Length
- Unless otherwise specified, it is up to you to decide how much to write for each question.
- Include the question number in your answer.
Independence
- The answers you give must be your own work. Excessive similarity to other texts, including other students’ submissions, may lead to suspicion of cheating.
- It is not permitted to collaborate on the assignment with other students.
- If you generate all or part of the exam answers by using artificial intelligence, ChatGPT and the like, it may be considered cheating.
Academic integrity: references and literature list
- If you include material from other sources in your answer (i.e. facts, arguments, claims), you must provide a reference to the original source (author/book/article or webpage).
- It is not required to include detailed references to sources (page numbers) in this part of the exam. The exception is reproducing verbatim, which must be highlighted as a quote with author and page number in parentheses.
- A literature list is not required for the exam questions.
- A failure to meet the formal criteria may lead to the exam answers being graded as an F ("Fail"), even if other aspects are satisfactory. For instance, if the student is reproducing verbatim without giving a specific reference to the text cited.
Plagiarism control
All submitted work goes through the plagiarism control program Ourginal and will be checked against texts on the internet, syllabus literature, study guides, and other students’ uploaded work both for this and previous semesters. Lack of appropriate citations and references or excessive similarity with other students’ work may lead to suspicion of cheating and may result in serious consequences for you as a student.
