ANT4700 – Ancient Literature in Translation
Course description
Course content
Ancient Greek and Latin literature (covering a period from approximately 800 BC to 500 AD) is in many ways the basis of our own culture and our own way of thinking; numerous literary texts of antiquity have become – and still remain – highly influential on the literature of later periods to this day. This course provides an overview of the history of ancient literature and, in its main part, an introduction to many important classics from Greek and Latin literature. In addition to this, students will also have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with some lesser known (but nonetheless important) ancient texts. All texts are read in translation.
Learning outcome
- A general overview of the history of ancient Greek and Latin literature from 800 BC to 500 AD (authors, works, genres, trends, developments).
- In-depth knowledge of many important and influential classics from ancient literature (e.g. Homer, Sophocles, Plato, Virgil, Ovid, etc.).
- Deepened insights in, and understanding of, the importance and influence of ancient literature in later periods to this day.
- The ability to read and interpret ancient literary texts independently (in translation), and to understand and evaluate similarities as well as differences between literature of our period and ancient texts.
- To develop your own further thoughts and questions about ancient texts of own interest.

Teaching
14 double sessions of seminars common with ANT2700 – Ancient Literature in Translation.
In order for you to qualify for the final exam, the following compulsory assignment must be approved by the teacher:
- written assignment of 3-4 pages on a self chosen subject.
It is highly recommended that students prepare for lectures as these will focus on the texts.
All lectures will be podcasted.
Please note that the teaching material consists of podcasts in addition to the syllabus.
Examination
Written exam (4 hours).
For master's students, there will be an extended examination with more questions.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, the compulsory assignment must be approved by the teacher.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
