IBSO4200 – Digital approaches to Ibsen Studies

Course content

This course will introduce you to selected digital approaches that are used and being developed in Ibsen Studies. The Centre for Ibsen Studies is a world-leading institution in developing digital methods for research in the Humanities. We look at a wide range of methods in the course of a semester, including text interrogation, mapping, network analysis, and using virtual reality technology in theatre research. We will be engaging with the digital archives, databases and models hosted by the Virtual Ibsen Centre, including HISe, IbsenStage and the VR model of Komediehuset. The theoretical and methodological focus may vary from semester to semester.

Learning outcome

Upon completing the course, the student should be able to

  • discuss the common digital methods used in Ibsen Studies and Humanities in general;

  • curate, clean, organize data and generate visualizations that can support a research argument

  • write basic codes and queries relevant to Ibsen studies;

  • interpret Ibsen’s works, the adaptations of his works and their use world-wide through data interrogation and visualization;

  • analyze, assess and critique others’ use of digital methods in humanities research;

  • apply the different digital methods in one’s own research projects;

Overlapping courses

Teaching

This course consists of 14 units, with additional workshops on digital skill building. The units are grouped into 3-4 modules with specific focuses on different themes. The form of teaching combines asynchronistic lectures and interviews (in pre-recorded videos), group discussions on Canvas, peer reviews, and group projects.

Examination

Each student must submit three to four reports (15 pages in total) during the course. Revisions of these reports are then submitted in a portfolio as the final exam. In other words, this course has portfolio exam as the form of its final exam.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
