MITRA4001 – Reading course I - Key Issues in Modern International and Transnational History

Course content

The reading course offers students an opportunity to explore a key issue in modern international and transnational history in further depth. Students are introduced to a range of secondary literature on a particular topic. Reading research and discussing it in class, students look closely at how historians develop different and often conflicting interpretations of a topic through approaching it with different theories, methods and primary sources. Students are led to see how historians engage with each other’s arguments and advance new questions.

Learning outcome

After you have taken this course you are expected to be able to:

  • apply the knowledge about major trajectories of 19th- and 20th-century international and transnational history to a more specified historical topic
  • be able to analyze and present scholarly debates and controversies in a specific field of research in international and transnational history
  • be able to critically discuss historical research and formulate an informed view on scholarly debates in international and transnational history

The course is only available to students accepted to Modern International and Transnational History (master).

A good ability to read and understand English is required for this course.

Teaching

Active participation in class as well as preparation for each meeting are expected. In case of absence, students need to inform the lecturer.

Examination

The course is assessed by a portfolio consisting of reflection papers and extracts based on the curriculum. The assignment is specified on the Canvas page for the course.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
