Runology is concerned with some 1300 years of history writing. Runes constituted the script used by many Germanic peoples from the second century A.D. Their use died out in Norway around 1400. This course spans the entire history of runes and gives an overview of both the secondary literature and the inscriptions themselves.
Learning outcome
The main goal is to learn to read and interpret runic inscriptions. The course will supplement, and be of particular interest to, those students taking other courses in cultural, historical, or language studies. Sufficient foundation is also given for those who wish to go on and specialize in Runology.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
University Gerneral Entrance Requirements.
Recommended previous knowledge
While only the University General Entrance Requirements need be met in order to be considered for admission to this course, a little knowledge of Old Norse would be to the student's advantage. Syllabus litterature will be in Scandanavian languages and English.
Teaching
The teaching are given in minimum 10 or 14 double lectures. The lectures are open to all, but the seminars are open only for students with admission to the teaching.Teaching will be a mixture of lectures, seminars, trips to museums and collections, and working in groups and seminars.
Examination
Two qualifying assignments have to be approved before the student may take the final exam. If the student receives "not approved" the student has the opportunity to hand in a revised version for a second try. The final exam will be a 4-hour school exam.

No examination support material is allowed.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Students can ask for an explanation of the grade. This must be done within a week after the grade was made known to the student. To obtain the explanation, send an e-mail to middelalder-student@iakh.uio.no. It is up to the sensor whether the explanation will be given orally or in writing. The student's e-mail must contain information of an e-mail address and a telephone number he or she can be reached on.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
