Solvents and Solubility
Torraca, G., Solubility and solvents for Conservation Problems, ICCROM third edition (1984). A great review or introduction to the groups of solvents used in conservation, the functional groups that distinguish them and the effect those groups have on the intermolecular forces that in turn establish their solubility parameters.
Hedley, G., “Solubility Parameters and varnish removal: a survey”, in Gerry Hedley Measured Opinions, edited C. Villlers, United Kingdom Institute for Conservation, London (1993) pp.128-134. A really good review of solubility parameters.
Stravroudis, C. and Blank, S., “Solvents & Sensibility”, WAAC Newsletter, Vol. 11, No. 2 (May 1989) pp.2-10. (Full text can be found on the WAAC website) A humorous look at solubility parameters that suggests that we can ignore them. While the message may have some validity it helps to have read the previous two articles in order to fully understand what the authors mean. They also introduce Wolbers’ research as a revolution at a time when the critical research had yet to weigh in fully.
New Cleaning Methods
Wolbers, R. C., with Sterman, N.T. and Stravroudis, C. Notes for Workshop on New Methods in the Cleaning of Paintings, The Getty Conservation Institute, Marina del Rey, CA (August 1990) Focus on the sections concerning cleaning materials which in the above text is section IV.
The Effects of Solvents and Cleaning Agents
Michaliski, S., “A physical model of the cleaning of oil paint” in Cleaning Retouching and Coatings, IIC, London (1990) pp.85-92. A review of the literature up to 1990. It touches upon leaching and swelling of oil paint and has a good list of bibliography.
Phenix, A. and Sutherland, K. “The cleaning of paintings: effects of organic solvents on oil paint films”, Reviews in Conservation 2 (2001) A good review on the effects of solvents on oil paints. Once you read this you can pick one or two articles cited in this text or in the following bibliography to get a feel for the type of writing published on this topic. The list of citations in this article will be more complete than my own bibliography.
Khandekar, N. “A survey of the conservation literature relating to the development of aqueous gel cleaning on painted and varnished surface”, Reviews in Conservation 1 (2000) pp. 10-20. A great review on the research done on the effects of solvents gels on oil paint. Like the above citation, you can use this article to choose a few of the research articles to get a feel of the literature and use the citations as a more complete bibliography on the subject than my own.
Philosophical Issues on Cleaning and History
Hedley, G., “On humanism, aesthetics and the cleaning of paintings”, in Gerry Hedley Measured Opinions, edited C. Villlers United Kingdom Institute for Conservation, London (1993) pp.152-166. This is an incredibly well presented discussion of partial, selective and total cleaning.
Ruhemann, H., The Cleaning of Paintings Problems and Potentialities, Frederick A. Praeger, New York, Washington (1968). While this book may be shocking at times from our 21st century point of view it is one of the only texts that I know of that addresses cleaning from the point of view of a respected practitioner. His chapters on his background and the techniques and ethics of cleaning paintings are really fascinating from a historical point of view and often still relevant.
Sutherland, K., “Cleaning, controversy and research” introductory chapter in Solvent extractable components of oil paint films, academic dissertation, FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam (2001) pp.1-29. The first two chapters of this dissertation are a succinct review of cleaning controversies, the roll of science in conservation and a literature review of studies of solvent action.
