Course content
Smuggling, prostitution and other forms for illegal production and trade were ways to keep up a living for the urban poor in early modern European towns. The taxpaying burghers constantly felt the pressure from below, and clung to privileges and monopole legislation. It was a struggle involving class and gender. In this course the urbanisation process in early modern Europe will concentrate on the gender perspective. We will focus topics as - women’s work in early modern European town, - the politics of guilds, - gender, power and authority in public and private, - family economy and the distribution of property, - dicsiplination of a young workforce, - prostitution, - conflict and cooperation in the garrison towns The reading list of the course presents a European overview with special weight on the towns in Northern Europe.
Learning outcome
Students must know the main trends in the Europan urban history from the 13th to the 19th centuries, and be able to discuss different topics in a gender perspective. Specifically, students must be able to account for the methodological problems in this field and be familiar with the main aspects, both theoretical and methodological in current debates in the field. Students should master critical reading, independent thought and academic writing, and be able to express his or her knowledge both orally and in writing.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
A good ability to read and write English is required for this course. Admission to the mastersprogramme in History.
Teaching
This course is given in the form of seminars.
Examination
The examination for this course is a 20 minute lecture. Each student will be given a topic for the lecture. For further information, see the semester page.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
After the examination result is announced, there will be possible to have an explanation of grades from the examiner. At oral examinations or assessments of practical skills, a request for such an explanation must be made immediately on notification of the mark. Requests for explanations of other assessments must be submitted within one week after the candidate learns of the mark. This request must be made by sending an e-mail to: historie-student@iakh.uio.no The explanation will be given either in writing or oral, this will be decided by the examiner. Please inform of your phone number, e-mail address where you can be contacted as well as your candidate number.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
