About the scholarship
The MIRAGE project funds up to three scholarships, each amounting to NOK 30 000. Half of the scholarship will be paid at the start, and half when the master thesis is successfully completed.
The scholarships are aimed at master theses where is expressed a need to use computational tools, as developed by the MIRAGE project. MIRAGE provides tools for sound or music analysis, and the students could work on a topic where they could use the computer-generated analyses for their study. Example of computational analyses that students could use for their studies could be: analysis of dynamics, timbre, automated transcription, analysis of rhythm, tonality, melody, motifs, structure, etc. Any interested candidate is highly welcome to contact Olivier Lartillot (cf. below) in order to check how their study could fit with the MIRAGE technologies.
Two scholarships have already been awarded. For the final scholarship, we particularly invite applications with a focus on the following topic:
- Western Art music, with the co-supervision of ?yvin Dybsand
Who can apply
Students enrolled in the Master Program in Musicology or the Master Program in Music, Communication and Technology (MCT) at the University of Oslo, who are planning to start their thesis work autumn 2022, or who are already collecting data and/or working on their thesis. Both students planning to write a 30 or 60 ECTS thesis are eligible.
How to apply
- The application should be no more than 3 pages in total. It must include:
- A concise and clear description of the research question, stating the goals and hypotheses/ predictions of the project.
- A clear description of the conception and design of the project, how acquisition of data (if any) is going to (or did) take place, methods and procedure, and how the analysis and interpretation of data is going to be (or was) performed.
- Declare, in a separate short section at the end of the document, why the project is interesting and why the MIRAGE project should give you a scholarship for carrying out this specific project. Please state in one or two sentences what you believe is the relevance of the project.
- Conclude the document by describing your role in the project as well as the role of the supervisor in planning and designing the project. Describe your own role in the analysis of the data and the preparation of a manuscript, and argue for the feasibility given the limited time of your study and the duration of the master/profession program.

Notification
Applicants will be notified of the results via e-mail in early September. Confirmation letters to those receiving a scholarship will be sent shortly thereafter.
