Food and Paper: When lines become melodies: sketch-guided melody generation

This week's Food and Paper is presented by Cristina Jorda i Custal

?

Abstract

Melodic contour is a powerful tool for describing how melodies move and for analyzing their structure. In this presentation, I will introduce my current project on sketch-guided melody generation. The goal is to combine an existing melody with a hand-drawn contour so that the generated continuation follows the sketched shape while preserving key musical properties of the original melody. I will present the core ideas of the project, outline the steps completed so far, and discuss the next directions. As the project is still in its early stages, I welcome any feedback and suggestions.

Bio

Cristina Jordà i Custal is a doctoral research fellow at IMV with a background in engineering, artificial intelligence, and music. Her research focuses on understanding how melodic contours can be analyzed and generated using computational methods, drawing on music theory, machine learning, and computational musicology. She investigates new ways of representing and clustering melodic contours, as well as generative approaches that bridge contour analysis with melody creation
