Abstract:
In this talk, we will describe a computational approach to analyse transcriptions of Greek folk music. One objective is to reveal the music characteristics of two dance styles – mpalos and syrtos – and the influence of the geographical provenance of each tune. A range of music features are extracted form each transcribed tune, with a particular focus on motivic analysis. We present an approach to extract repeated melodic patterns from the scores, and explain the underlying challenges. The stylistic “topology” of the corpus can then be visualised using self-organising maps and structured through clustering.

Anna-Maria Christodoulou is a Music Technology graduate student from the University of Athens, currently an Intern at RITMO, UiO on the MIRAGE project. Her research interests are focused on Music, technology and cognition. Otherwise, in her free time she likes to create algorithmic compositions, curate podcasts, sing with her choir friends and listen to music.
Olivier Lartillot is a researcher at RITMO, working in the fields of computational music and sound analysis and artificial intelligence. He obtained a funding from the Research Council of Norway under the FRIPRO-IKTPLUSS program, for a project called MIRAGE - A Comprehensive AI-Based System for Advanced Music Analysis (2020-2023).
