Please tell us a little bit about your background and your education
I originally graduated from the Higher College of Economics in Moscow with a B.A. degree in political science. Then I did an M.A. degree in history of political thought at the ?cole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, in France. My research interests in area studies and political ideology led me to write a PhD thesis exploring the new trends of nationalism in contemporary Russia, which I successfully defended in December 2021 at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris. I subsequently taught at Sorbonne University and carried out postdoctoral research at the ?cole des hautes études en sciences sociales, working on the relationship between war and nationalism. In 2024, I was fortunate enough to be awarded a Marie Sk?odowska Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellow.
What will be the focus of your work at ILOS, are you attached to a specific project?
My 2-year MSCA project is supervised by Helge Blakkisrud aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of Russian politics by building on, and contributing to, the literature in political demography, nationalism studies, peace and conflict studies, and illiberalism studies. Indeed, my overall objective is to examine the ways in which interstate war entails new demographic strategies in the context of a declining and ageing population. Hence the project’s title: Wartime Demographic Engineering: War, Nationalism, and Population Politics in Putin’s Russia (WARDEM). Challenging ‘geriatric peace’ theory, WARDEM will develop a model linking the analysis of an authoritarian state’s aggressive foreign policy with the reshaping of its population and changes in its nationalist discourse.
How do you prefer to spend your free time?
You know, I’m a passionate walker! I love city tours and hiking. Having joined UiO at the beginning of September, I’ve already started exploring Oslo and the surroundings. I also enjoy reading fiction and listening to classical music and European variety from the 70s and 80s. Perhaps unlike some other expats in Norway, I’m impatient for winter to arrive, so I can get back to the cross-country skiing I did as a child.
