How to create extended deadlines/second attempts in Canvas

Guide on how to create second attempts or new deadlines for students who are granted extensions.

Step-by-step:

  1. Access the course in Canvas and click on "Assignments".

  2. Choose the assignment in question and click on "Edit". Do not create a new assignment.

  3. Click on "+Add" on the bottom of the page. Do not edit the assigned-to-"Everyone"-box.

  4. Type the name of the student who was granted the extension/second attempt to assign them the new deadline.

  5. Add the new deadline by filling out both "Due date" and "Available until".
We recommend making the assignment available 15 minutes past the official deadline in case of technical issues for students who submit last minute.

  6. For second attempts, you can click on "Reassign an assignment" in Speedgrader when grading and giving feedback. This way students can view your comments and a Redo label in the List View Dashboard. You must still create the extended deadline as described above. Reassigning an assignment will not automatically change a student's due dates or availability dates. Read more about reassigning assignments and see illustration photos by clicking here.
