On Monday 28.06.21 the Commision adopted an adequacy decision for the UK under the GDPR (external link). The decision is valid for four years. The decision states that the level of privacy protection in the UK is essentially equivalent to the level of protection guaranteed in the EEA. This means that for the next four years personal data can flow freely to and from the UK without the need for an additional transfer mechanism.
Whether or not the decision will be prolonged after four years depends upon whether the UK makes any changes to national privacy laws.
Research projects that are cooperating with UK partners that need to transfer data to and from the UK for more than four years, need to ensure that they have an additional transfer tool in case the adequacy decision is not prolonged. NSD will ensure that these research projects have an additional transfer tool.
