For students from the United States
Bessie Haugen Johnson Scholarship
- Application deadline: March 15
- 5 scholarships awarded annually
- Amount awarded covers the full basic on-campus fee for the ISS ($ 4,785). It does not include additional course fees (for Norwegian courses), travel or personal expenses.
- Awardees are required to live on campus during the ISS session and are required to write an essay reflecting on their experiences at the ISS to be due no later than September 15.
Criteria:
- Applicant essay, one page essay explaining previous travel, study experience and financial need.
- Priority given to applicants who have never traveled/lived/studied abroad.
- Send essay to iss@stolaf.edu by March 15.
Sons of Norway Scholarships:
- The Sons of Norway Foundation manages the King Olav V Fund, which accepts applications from students who wish to study in Norway, but are not necessarily Sons of Norway members.
- There is also a scholarship offered through the Sons of Norway specifically for the International Summer School. If you, your parents, or other relatives are members of Sons of Norway, you may also be eligible to apply for other scholarships from local lodges or districts. An example of this scholarship is;

King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund
King Olav V of Norway gave his permission to the Sons of Norway Foundation to use his name in establishing a fund to be known as the “King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund.”
Its purpose is to fund activities in which the American and Norwegian heritages are explored, studied and shared by qualified scholarship recipients. Endowment money has been raised by selling medallions and securing gifts from Sons of Norway members.
Who can apply:
- Any American, age 18 or older, who has demonstrated a keen and sincere interest in Norwegian heritage and/or any Norwegian, age 18 or older, who has demonstrated an interest in American heritage.
- Those who have a certificate of completion from high school and are enrolled in a recognized educational institution (arts, crafts, literature, history, music, folklore, etc.).
- If you are not currently enrolled in a post-secondary program you must show proof of enrollment prior to receiving scholarship funding.
- Applicants who have met the entrance requirements and been accepted to attend the International Summer School at the University of Oslo
- Candidates may only receive two Sons of Norway scholarships in a five year period.

The Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship (only District 2 members, children or grandchildren are eligible to apply )
- The Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship Fund is a permanent, endowed scholarship fund designed to encourage and facilitate attendance to the International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo in Norway. The amount of the award varies each year and covers tuition, room and board.
- Only District 2 members, children or grandchildren are eligible to apply this scholarship.
The scholarship is named for Carl M. Saltveit, Sr., in honor and remembrance of his contributions to the Norwegian-American community through Grieg Lodge #15 (Portland, Oregon), his work in Norwegian war relief, and educational exchange and services to immigrants and visitors from Norway. In addition, he served as an International Director of the Sons of Norway.
The District Two Scholarship Committee will choose the top three candidates and forward their applications, along with a recommendation, to the Sons of Norway Foundation. The Foundation will select the recipient and administer the scholarship.

Applicants must:
- Have met the entrance requirements and been accepted to attend the International Summer School at the University of Oslo
- Be a current member of District Two or be a child or grandchild of a current member of District Two
- Have completed one full year of college level work.
You do not have to be currently enrolled in school. Applicants of any age who have completed one full year of college level work are eligible to apply.

Warne - Eng Scholarship
The Douglas Warne – Rolf & Wenche Eng Scholarship creates an opportunity for qualified applicants to attend educational institutions in Norway and assists with the costs of tuition, room and board.
This scholarship is endowed and funded by Douglas Warne in honor and remembrance of his experiences at the University of Oslo, International Summer School and the friendship and assistance provided by the Rotary and the Rolf and Wenche Eng family during that school year and subsequent visits to Norway. Both affected his choices in life and in his profession. In 2013, Mr. Warne marked being active in his local Scandinavian Community for more than 50 years. He is past president of the Norwegian Commercial Club, Leif Erikson Lodge of the Sons of Norway, secretary of Leif Erikson Recreation Board and a member of the Board of Governors of the Sons of Norway Foundation.
Who can apply:
- Any current American or Canadian members of the Sons of Norway or Rotary, as well as their children or grandchildren. Those students without family members in the Sons of Norway or Rotary may select an advocate or representative from either organization to sponsor their application.
- Applicants of any age who have completed one full year of college level work.
- Applicants who have been accepted by an educational post-secondary institution in Norway including but not limited to craft, folk, music, theatre or technical schools, Oslo International Summer School or undergraduate colleges/universities in Norway.

Leif Eie Scholarship Fund
- This scholarship is intended to promote the education of students in the ideals of the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce to encourage and support the enhancement of trade, commerce, and other professional relations between Norway, Washington State, and the Pacific Northwest.
- In addition, the scholarship is intended to promote the cultural ties between Norway and the United States of America.
- Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, residing in the region of the Seattle Chapter of the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce.

Lakselaget Scholarship Fund
- The Lakselaget Scholarship Fund was established to celebrate, encourage and advance the organization's motto, women who swim against the current.
- Its goal is to promote the international connections between Norway and the U.S., and learn, teach and share knowledge that will benefit women in their complex roles in today's society.
- Applicants should have an interest in contemporary Norway and all things Norwegian, such as the sciences, technology, business, politics, language and culture, and who seek to enhance and disseminate their knowledge.
- This scholarship is limited to women citizens of the United States who are residing in Minnesota, are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited Minnesota college or university or at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and are planning to study in Norway.

The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation
The Canadian Institute for Nordic Studies offers CINS Undergraduate Summer Bursaries, valued at $1,500, normally up to 4 bursaries per year. The competition is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants enrolled in an undergraduate language course in Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish at a Canadian university or college. The bursary is tenable at any recognized summer programme offering language and/or culture courses in a Scandinavian language in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden.

When applicants have been notified of acceptance by OISS, they can apply to the Sons of Norway Foundation in Canada for a financial grant. Applicants can receive up to a maximum of CDN $750.00 each, depending on the number of applicants.

Contact your institution’s Study Abroad or Financial Aid office for more information. The student’s home institution determines the availability of financial aid. The University of Oslo is an approved institution for students who wish to apply for guaranteed student loans.
