Deadlines
The deadlines are:
- 1. June for applying for an extra and final semester in an autumn semester.
- 1. December for applying for an extra and final semester in a spring semester..
Reduced progression and leave
If you need a leave or wish to study with reduced progression, you must apply within the set deadlines. Reduced progression and leave may not be granted retroactively.
You can not apply for leave (without documentation) or reduced progression if you are in your fourth semester, but you may apply for one extra and a final semester as described below.
For parental leave, specific conditions apply.
If you are ill for the whole or large parts of a semester, the usual guidelines for leave apply.
Delay
Extra semester
If you are delayed in your studies and you are unable to complete and submit the master’s thesis within the deadline determined by the department, you may apply for an extra semester. The application must include a work schedule for completion of the master’s thesis. This schedule must be approved by your supervisor. The application will be processed by the department where you are studying.
Apply for an extra semester in your graduate studies.
If you do not apply for an ekstra semester (5th semester) in order to complete your master thesis or if your application for an extra semester is not approved, your right to study will be revoked and all formal contact with your thesis adviser will cease.
Final semester
If, however, one additional term is not sufficient, you may apply for one final semester. The application must include a new work schedule approved by the supervisor. You need to show progress towards the completion of your master thesis during the approved extra semester (5th semester) of your Master's degree. The application will be processed by the Faculty of Humanities.
If you are sick for the entire or the majority of the semester, the usual guidelines for leave applies.

If you do not apply for a final semester (6th semester) in order to complete your master thesis, if your application for a final semester is not approved or if you are unable to complete the master thesis by the deadline during that final semester, your right to study will be revoked and all formal contact with your thesis adviser will cease.
