Final recognition of student exchange periods
You need to apply for final recognition because:
- Your studies abroad must be formally recognized for your study programme to permit the foreign education to appear on your diploma when you graduate from UiO.
- The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund is notified about your progress, so that loans can be converted to grants.
Recognition of other foreign education
If you have taken courses at master’s level abroad you can apply for them to be recognized in your UiO master's degree. The courses must be approved by the faculty.
Required documents
You must attach official transcript of records as well as translations if the original language is not English or a Scandinavian language.
If you wish that a course or courses taken abroad should replace compulsory parts of your studies, you should attach course descriptions, reading lists, overviews of lectures and – if available – submitted written assignments that show the actual content of your studies.

Final approval of student exchange periods
When you return from your exchange period abroad, it is crucial that we receive the necessary documentation to have your education registered at UiO. This is necessary in order to include the courses you have taken in your degree at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and for converting parts of your educational loan to a grant.
If you have taken courses instead of or in addition to those for which prior recognition has been granted, these must be assessed in the same way as those courses that have been granted prior recognition. If all courses have been granted prior recognition we only need a transcript of your grades. Bear in mind that this must be the original or a certified copy. From the USA, the transcript must be sent directly from the educational institution to the MN International Office.

Faculty of Medicine
If you have studied at other educational institutions, but want to complete your education or take a new degree at the University of Oslo you can apply for an academic assessment of your previous education.
An approval will not be granted until the student has been admitted to the programme of studies. This applies to all programmes of study at the Faculty, except for nutrition, which assess external education in connection with supplementary admission (local admission) to higher study levels.
See exemption, advancement and introductory courses for the programme in medicine.
The programmes of study have different structures. This means that external education that does not match the level and the programme's academic requirements cannot necessarily be fully incorporated into a degree at the Faculty of Medicine.

Faculty of Theology
You apply for final approval after returning from your student exchange period.
Such approval is also necessary for you to convert parts of your educational loan to a grant.
You can obtain final approval by the Faculty of Theology if:
- you have been admitted to a programme of study at the faculty and
- the student exchange period can be recognized for the programme of study you are attending.
There are two types of recognition:
- Applications concerning compulsory courses involves an assessment of the courses you have taken abroad, in comparison to specified courses at UiO.
- Applications concerning elective courses involves a recognition of courses that you have taken abroad as unspecified credits. In these cases, the courses taken abroad will have no equivalent at UiO. Assessments of applications will nevertheless consider any potential overlap with courses that you already have taken at UiO, or that would be a natural component in the course of your study programme.
Remember to enclose all necessary documentation and be meticulous when filing the application to prevent undue delay in the processing of the application
Required documents in applications concerning elective courses:
- Certified copy of the final transcript/diploma in the original language with translation into English or a Scandinavian language.
- An official explanation from the university of its grading system, degree structure and credits system.
- If you have taken language courses abroad, further documentation must be attached to the application, see items 3 and 4 below.
- You are also recommended to attach certified course descriptions/the original graduate studies prospectus, with information on course programmes and types of examinations. If these certifications are not available in English or a Scandinavian language, you must submit a summary in one of these languages.
