The space physics and technology programme offers specialization into either space physics or space technology. You can also write a thesis on a subject where the fields intersect. Your work can be analytical, computational or experimental, or any combination thereof.
Space physics
If you choose to specialize in space physics much of what you learn will deal with the fundamental physical processes in plasma in space. Through combining the physics you already know, such as Newton's laws of motion, with statistical mechanics and Maxwell's equations we can study anything from how the upper atmosphere in space affect GPS signals to how comets interact with solar winds. In the field of space physics the problems we face can often be answered by use of experimental data or computational models, or a combination of these.
Space technology
Should you choose to specialize in space technology your thesis will be more in the experimental realm. Here you will be able to create and develop electronics used in space technology such as research rockets or satellites. You could develop electrical components for communication between a rocket and mini payloads, or you could participate in building miniaturized satellite and rocket instruments. Our section employs several engineers who assits the students with their thesis, and any practical and experimental work that is required.
4DSpace-group co-operation
We also collaborate with the 4DSpace group. 4DSpace is a joint effort at the University of Oslo between researchers from the fields of physics, informatics and mathematics. Their goal is to understand why instabilities and turbulence affect the upper atmosphere (ionosphere) through developing measuring instruments, computational models and tools for data analysis.
International co-operation
If you take your master's degree in this group we also offer courses at the University Center in Svalbard (UNIS), where you can spend one or more semesters. You may also take parts of your master abroad or be connected with a foreign supervisor during your master project.
Study environment
You will be situated in the middle of the research section and work in Close proximity with academic staff and students. All students will have their own desk, thus making it easier meeting up with other students.
Along with the 4DSpace group we have a large international environment. Our many collaborative partners are spread all over the world, many in Canada, USA, Japan and Russia.
The 4DSpace group gather for seminars biweekly, where students present their work and future plans.
We host a christmas party and a lunch, and at least twice per year barbeques.
