Required specialization
Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
In order to qualify for admission, you must fulfill one of the following requirements:
- A specialization of at least 80 ECTS credits within general linguistics (including a minimum of 40 ECTS credits in core areas, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics or pragmatics).
- At least 40 ECTS credits in general linguistics (in core areas, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics or pragmatics) combined with a specialization of at least 80 ECTS credits in any language (e.g. English, German, Japanese or Latin)
Students from the University of Oslo will qualify with the following specializations:
- A specialization in general linguistics amounting to at least 80 ECTS credits (80-gruppe i Lingvistikk - only in Norwegian)
- At least 40 ECTS credits in general linguistics - (40-gruppe i Lingvistikk, with LING1100, LING1111, LING1112 - only in Norwegian) AND a specialization in any language amounting to at least 80 ECTS credits, such as:
- English (80gruppe – Engelsk - only in Norwegian)
- German (80-gruppe – Tysk - only in Norwegian)
- Japanese language (80-gruppe – Japansk spr?k - only in Norwegian)
- Latin (80-gruppe – Latin - only in Norwegian)
Ranking of applicants
Selection is based on your academic performance in the required subjects for this programme.
If you meet the requirements under specialization number 1, you will be ranked by the grade average in your specialization.
If you meet requirement under specialization number 2, you will be ranked by the grade average in
- the best grades in general linguistics, amounting to 40 ETCS credits, and
- the best grades from your specialization within one language, amounting to 40 ECTS credits.
