When can I study abroad?
If you want to spend a semester at a university abroad, we recommend that you go in the second semester. Students who spend the entire second semester abroad may apply for an exemption from compulsory courses given in this semester, if there is no corresponding course at the host university.
Where can I study abroad?
Here are our recommendations:
- Helsinki - there are great typologists and an MA programme in "Linguistic Diversity in the Digital Age".
- Cologne has a strong faculty in typology and grammaticalization, the Southeast Asia / Pacific region, and its own department of comparative-historical linguistics.
- Konstanz has a strong faculty specializing in many areas of linguistics.
- ?cole Normale Supérieure - Paris – specializations in Super Linguistics and philosophy.
Other possibilities
UiO's agreements with priority places for linguistics students:
Summer schools
Not everyone is able to be abroad for a whole semester. There are other ways to add an international component to your education, and we recommend some summer schools.
Nordkurs gives you ten credits in Nordic language and literature, and you receive scholarships for travel and accommodation. You meet students from all over the Nordic countries in these courses.
Many linguistics students meet in Crete for the Crete Summer School of Linguistics (CreteLing), a very high-level summer school. Here you cover everything yourself (you can apply to ILN for support). CreteLing does not provide credits, but there is a lot of inspiration to be had here for your master's thesis, or a term paper based on supervised reading!
And there are a lot of fun possibilities at Aarhus Summer University. We have an agreement with Aarhus, so you do not have to pay a course fee there.
