What is your job description?
I'm an organizational and political advisor at No to Nuclear Weapons Norway (Nei til Atomv?pen). The organization works with political influence and public education related to nuclear disarmament and nuclear power issues. We're a small organization so I'm involved in almost everything we do such as administrative tasks, building local chapters, planning events, strategy planning for political influence and advising on the clean-up of Norwegian nuclear waste.
What is the most exciting thing about your job?
Aside from the cliche that I get to work on one of the most important issues the world is facing with really dedicated people, I also like the fact that I get to combine big picture strategy planning with everyday routine tasks.
How do you use your education at work?
The fight against nuclear weapons is one that needs to be tackled at a local, national and global level simultaneously, and it needs to be understood in relation to the same structures that create the climate crisis and social inequality. I think that the geographical lenses human geographers see the world through help me see these issues from a broader and more interconnected perspective.
How is a typical day at work?
The days vary a lot but can entail a staff meeting where we discuss political strategy or campaign ideas, e-mailing local chapters, writing an article for our magazine and planning our next event.
How did you get the job?
I came across the job ad at global.no and had one interview. I think the combination of a social science degree (that stood out a bit) and the NGO experience from previously working at Nature and Youth (Natur og Ungdom) was the reason I got the job. In addition to a lot of luck of course which always plays a big role in these things.
