– As a finacial advisor I am responsible for a range of financial functions and analyses that support the hospital’s financial management and decision-making processes. I work on budget preparation, monthly and annual reporting, project follow-up, and provide financial advice, says Simon Sandvik.
How did you get the job?
– I had two jobs and one internship at Oslo University Hospital throughout the two years of pursuing my master’s degree at Health Economics, Policy, and Management, which allowed me to become familiar with the hospital as an organization and to build a broad network within it. These experiences, combined with a relevant education, provided me with the practical knowledge and connections that were important in securing the position.
To what extent is the knowledge you acquired during the master's study in health management and health economics relevant to your current job?
– The master’s program has provided me with a comprehensive set of theoretical perspectives that are relevant to my current role. The foundational understanding of healthcare organization, policy, and economics has been pivotal in grasping the hospital’s dynamics. Additionally, the program equipped me with the analytical tools necessary to navigate the complexity of my work.
What do you like best about this profession?
– What I like about this profession is the opportunity to do meaningful work at Europe’s largest hospital. Additionally, working alongside highly skilled and knowledgeable colleagues makes the job even more rewarding.
What job opportunities are there within the profession?
– Many of my colleagues are former HEPMA students, which reflects the diverse opportunities available in this field. You can work in financial advising, analysis, project management, and more. There are also great prospects for professional development.
Do you have any career advice for new students?
– Find ways to stand out. Build your CV by taking on internships and/or part-time jobs during your studies, and use those opportunities to network. Also, make sure to start applying for jobs early!
