Required specialization
Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
Required specialization
- A specialization of at least 80 ECTS credits within humanities or social sciences.
- A minimum of 30 ECTS credits in modern history courses, either as a part of the specialization or in addition to it.
Students with a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from the University of Oslo meet the required specialization.
Required second language
In addition to the required level of English (see "Language requirements" below), the programme also requires an advanced level of knowledge of a second modern language. For example, Norwegian level B2 is sufficient for applicants to the University of Oslo; otherwise, an equivalent level in any other modern language is acceptable. The level of language command must be documented with an official transcript of records and certificate/diploma from a national upper secondary school (see "Secondary education" below).

- Why do you think you will thrive and successfully complete the programme?

Ranking of applicants
Selection is based on your academic performance in the required subjects for this programme.
Admission to this programme is usually highly competitive. Please note that even if you fulfill the minimum grade requirement, you are not guaranteed a study place in the programme.
You will be ranked on the basis of the following 80 ECTS credits:
- The best grades from the specialization within humanities or social science amounting to 50 ECTS credits
- 30 ECTS credits in modern history courses
For students with a bachelor's degree in International Studies from the University of Oslo, the grade point average will be taken from the specialization equal to 90 ECTS credits.
In addition to your grade average, your motivation letter will be evaluated and taken into consideration when ranking your application for admission.
