Required specialization
Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
The required specialization consists of 80 ECTS credits where the following, or equivalent, is included:
- 30 ECTS mathematics or statistics, of which a minimum of 20 ECTS within Calculus and Linear algebra.
- 50 ECTS within the following four groups, with at least 5 ECTS from each group:

Programming in a high level language like Python / Java / C++ or similar

Electronics

Electromagnetism / Microelectronics

Signal Processing / Circuit Analysis / Advanced course in physics*

*Advanced meaning a course which requires previous knowledge and which normally is taken towards the end of a bachelor's degree.
The required specialization can be met with the following courses from the University of Oslo, but also with other courses:
- MAT1100 – Calculus
- MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra
- MAT1120 – Linear Algebra
- IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications
- FYS1210 – Elementary Electronics with Project Work or IN1080 – Mechatronics
- FYS1120 – Electromagnetism or IN3170 – Microelectronics
- IN3190 – Digital Signal Processing or FYS3220 – Linear Circuit Theory
- FYS2130 – Oscillations and Waves or FYS3240 – Data Acquisition and Control

Ranking of applicants
Selection is based on your academic performance in the required subjects for this programme.
If an applicant has more than 80 ECTS credits in the required specialization, the 80 ECTS credits with the highest grades will form the grade average.
