Why go on a semester abroad?
A semester abroad is an opportunity to enrich your education and will provide an arena for personal growth. You will experience new perspectives and different styles of education which can enhance learning quality. It will also give you a professional edge, and open career opportunities you had not previously considered.
Develop your language skills
Most exchange agreements offer English courses, but you can also choose courses taught in the local language if you have expertise in it. If you had French, German or Spanish from upper secondary school, you can choose whether you want to study in these languages on exchange. If you are not comfortable studying in another language than English, you can for example take a local language course in the beginning of the exchange semester.
Stand out to employers
International experience is an important qualification valued by an increasing number of employers. Prospective employers in almost every field look favourably upon experience gained abroad and knowledge obtained of another language and culture.
Which semester can I go abroad
- We recommend that you go on exchange during your third semester (autumn semester) and take courses that can be approved as optional courses at the 4000-level.
- You can also go on exchange during the second semester (spring semester), if you have taken ECON4150 - Introductory Econometrics or equivalent in your bachelor degree.
- Master students will be given priority on the Department’s own exchange agreements. We prioritize students that are going on exchange in the recommended semester. Some agreements are highly competitive and we will therefor prioritize the students with the best grade point average.
Where can I go
- The Department of Economics has exchange agreements with several European universities and their Departments of Economics. We offer exchange opportunities in countries like Great Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal,China, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Approval of courses
The following criteria apply to the selection of courses during the exchange semester:
- The courses must be at master’s level.
- The courses must largely contain economics. Please note that marketing, management and accounting are not regarded as economics.
- Courses must not overlap with other courses that you have already taken or will take as part of your master’s degree. If the course you choose is overlapping with optional courses offered by the Department, you will not be able to sign up for the overlapping course at UiO when you come back.
- If you want to take mandatory courses during the exchange, please contact sv-info@sv.uio.no
- We recommend that you apply for a preapproval of all courses. This provides predictability for both you and us.
Do note that not all institutions have the same course structure as the UiO. This means that you often have to take more than three courses per semester to achieve the equivalent of 30 credits. This is stipulated on the web pages of each agreement. If you are planning to exchange for two semesters, please contact your student advisor.
