Learning outcomes

You will learn to gather and analyze empirical data on the use of key concepts in two broad, interdisciplinary areas of discourse: Sustainability and Democracy.

Aside from transferable skills in data analysis, you will learn to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and provide detailed critical reports of their findings.

Knowledge

You will:

  • have enhanced critical awareness of how the discourse around shared values is often based on a fragile understanding of certain concepts
  • have a thorough understanding of the importance of conceptual analysis for the debate on democracy and sustainability 
  • develop a nuanced understanding of a constellation of concepts associated with democracy and sustainability
  • develop an ability to critique taken-for-granted, singular definitions of key concepts that do not attend to historical, disciplinary, and cultural diversity
  • be able to elaborate informed arguments in debates relating to a range of key concepts, including sustainability and democracy
  • what corpora are and how they can be employed for conceptual analysis 
  • how to generate, sort and analyse concordances to reveal various discursive patterns that offer an insight into the use and meanings of a specific concept 
  • how to use various visualization tools to reveal strong patterns and enhance the analysis of very large corpora
  • how to access and make sense of metadata on the provenance of a particular pattern to understand who uses it and in what context.

Skills

You can: 

  • appreciate and be able to think through the historical, disciplinary and cultural contingency of various definitions of key concepts that underpin social and political practices
  • explain and debate the meanings of key concepts from different perspectives and points of view
  • develop a heightened sense of civic engagement and participate meaningfully in the various debates taking place in our democratic societies
  • contribute to group discussion in a respectful and productive manner 
  • prepare and deliver a coherent and clear presentation to a group of peers and experts, to a high standard and in good timing
  • identify patterns in a variety of discourses and genres and explain what they reveal about the semantic and affective properties of specific concepts in specific contexts
  • use corpus analysis tools effectively to analyse textual data and key concepts that underpin the sustainability agenda
  • use corpus analysis tools effectively to analyse textual data and key concepts that underpin numerous debates about democracy and other key European values
  • address complex questions based on collective, live analysis of authentic data drawn from very large corpora in a datathon setting.

General competence

You will:

  • acknowledge the contingency of key concepts in discussing common values
