Start of studies for CS: Bioinformatics

Welcome to the study program CS: Bioinformatics at the Department of Informatics. We are looking forward to welcome you on Tuesday 13 August 2024. There is a joint program for all Master's students at the department  13 - 15 August

To do's at the beginning of the semester

  •  From 13-15 August, you will attend the Introductory week for master's students.
    • On the first day, there is a mandatory orientation meeting with your academic department, where you will receive important information about your program and meet your buddy group. Wednesday and Thursday's program is for all new master's students at the department.
  • 15 August is deadline for choosing courses.
    • Important! You don't need to do anything before the orientation meeting, but it's recommended to look through recommended courses in advance. Read more about selecting courses below.

Requirements for courses are shown in the overview of the structure of the programme option CS: Bioinformatics. You have to choose two of the mandatory courses IN4200, FYS-STK4155 and MAT4110, as well as HSE courses during the first year. In addition, you choose one of the recommended courses and three elective courses of 10 credits. In the overview, some of the recommended topics are mentioned. You may also want to take a look at the page about studies at the Center for Bioinformatics. Apart from this, there are no absolute requirements for courses, but you should choose courses that are relevant to the master's thesis you will choose. It is important to take into account that most courses only take place either in spring or autumn.

Tips:

  • Choose 3-4 topics that you think will suit you
  • Bring the list to the workshop on 14 August, where course selection is one of the topics
  • Feel free to discuss with teachers and fellow students

Research groups

During the work on the master's thesis, you will work in a research group and receive guidance from researchers in the group and possibly external supervisors. This field of study (CS: Bioinformatics) is affiliated with the Research Group for Scientific Computing and Machine Learning (SCML). We are working on developing methods for analyzing many different types of molecular biological data, usually related to DNA and proteins. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area and then knowledge is needed in both informatics, mathematics, statistics, biology and medicine. The goal is that the methods we develop should be able to be used to help us understand biological processes or interpret medical data. We collaborate a lot with other research environments in biology and medicine.

There will also be social events throughout the orientation week, so you can get to know your fellow students and research groups better.
