Career opportunities

Astrophysicist have various options as career opportunities. They can work with e.g. astrophysics, applied research, teaching, in addition to programming or modeling and data analysis in a number of areas in the business and in the public sector.

Throughout your studies, you gain knowledge and experience in applying mathematics, physics and computational science to solve various problems. This knowledge is in great demand in both the business and the public sector, and applies to everything from technology and IT companies to research institutions.
The institute also arranges career workshops to help students with their transition from studies to work life.

What jobs can an astrophysicist get?

Researcher PhD

In addition to exciting and varied job opportunities, you also have the opportunity to continue with a PhD. Some of the master's degree students who achieve very good results pursue a research career in astronomy.
First step is a doctorate (PhD) of 3 to 4 years at the University of Oslo or at a university abroad.
The programme can be financed through a fellowship funded by the University of Oslo or by the Norwegian Research Council.
