Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
The required specialization consists of 110 ECTS credits where the following, or equivalent, courses are included:
- 60 ECTS credits of chemistry courses with laboratory, including:
- KJM1101 – Generell kjemi or MENA1001 – Materials, Energy and Nanotechnology
- KJM1130 – Physical Chemistry I - Thermodynamics and Kinetics
- KJM2601 – Fysikalsk kjemi II - kvantekjemi og spektroskopi or FYS2140 – Quantum Physics
- 20 ECTS credits within chemistry or material science at advanced undergraduate level (3000 level). The course FYS3150 – Computational Physics may also be included. If the course KJM3310 – Physical Chemistry III - Statistical Thermodynamics for Chemistry, or its equivalent, is not included in your bachelor's degree, the course KJM4310 – Physical Chemistry III - Statistical Thermodynamics for Chemistrymust be included in the theoretical curriculum for the master's degree.
- 10 ECTS credits of unspecified chemistry
- 30 ECTS credits within mathematics
- 10 ECTS credits within physics
- 10 ECTS credits within programming
A minimum grade average of C (Norwegian grading scale), or equivalent, is required for 80 ECTS credits of the following, or equivalent:
KJM1101 or MENA1001, KJM1130, KJM2600 or FYS2140, 30 ECTS credits of chemistry courses where 20 ECTS credits are on advanced bachelor's level (3000
