Semester abroad

Your semester abroad is an excellent opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge in your field of study, a professional network, and increased cultural competence.

When should I go?

It is anticipated that you go abroad during the third semester, preferably to China or Taiwan.

You have three options to go abroad:

Study abroad

China

Taiwan

Europe

Internship abroad

The Student Internship Program at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

This arrangement is part of an agreement between the University of Oslo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where students achieve status as “Hospitant”. The University of Oslo will inform students in Asia and Middle East Studies about available positions and manage all communications with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This option is only available for students with Norwegian citizenship.

Arrange an internship agreement on your own

Talk to your supervisor and course instructor about internships in relevant organizations or companies. You should get your potential internship agreement approved by the Department before you contact them.

Field Work

Apply for Field Work grant

Field work is a good opportunity to gather first-hand information for your Master's thesis. Master's students are eligible to apply for funding to carry out field work or participate in conferences, seminars et cetera. 

You can apply for the grant as part of the course combination course combination KIN4550 – Research Topics in Chinese Culture and Society I or  KIN4650 – Research Topics in Chinese Culture and Society II and EAST4610 – Voices from East Asia: How to Communicate Research Results or if you wish to conduct fieldwork during your studies abroad or your internship.

The fieldwork must be relevant to your Master's thesis and should take place in the same semester the application is made. You cannot receive this type of funding more than once during your course of study. The department can grant up to 5000,- NOK for fieldwork.
