Part-time work and work permit

Be aware that it can be difficult to obtain a part-time job in order to supplement your budget. There are a limited amount of jobs available for students without knowledge of Norwegian.

 

If you want to work while studying in Norway, different rules applies to you as a student depending on your citizenship. Read more about what you must do when you come to Norway to study and maybe work (skatteetaten.no).  See also Work in Norway – The Official Guide.

EU/EEA citizens

Non-EU/EEA citizens

  • You can work up to 20 hours pr week during your first year of study.
  • You can work full-time during the holidays.
  • The part-time work permit has the same duration as the study permit.
  • Part-time work permit as a student only allows you to be an employee. You are therefore not allowed to set up your own business (sole proprietorship - enkeltmannsforetak) while you are on a student permit.

Renewal of part-time work permit

  • When renewing the study permit, the part-time work permit is not automatically renewed.
  • You must document satisfactory progress in your studies in order to continue to work part-time.

Tax deduction card

If you get a part-time job, you will need to apply for a tax deduction card with the Tax Administration.

To learn more about what to do and the formalities regarding part-time work in Norway, you can attend the Orientation meeting about part-time work. This meeting is aimed at international students and will usually take place once a semester.
