Exchange through Erasmus+
Did you know that Erasmus+ is a European exchange programme with a budget of 14 billion Euros in the current programme period? All UiO students on exchange through Erasmus+ can receive a grant for studies at partner universities in the 27 EU countries, the three EEA countries, and UiO partners in Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.
Apply for Erasmus+ studies
Most of the exchange agreements between UiO and European partner universities are part of the Erasmus+ programme. See all agreements.
Language Assessment
You will be invited to complete a free online language assessment before the exchange period, through the system EU Academy. The test will determine your proficiency level in the language you will use during your semester abroad, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). You can take a new test after the exchange period which allows you to measure the progress made during your stay abroad.
Sign the Grant Agreement
Before you can receive the grant, you have to sign and submit an Erasmus+ Grant Agreement.
UiO will send you the Grant Agreement by email in May/June for exchange in the autumn semester, and November/December for exchange in the spring semester.
Learning agreement
The Learning Agreement states which courses you will take abroad. Read the procedure for recognition at your faculty.
The Learning Agreement is your guarantee that courses taken abroad will be recognised as part of your degree at UiO. It also confirms that the courses you plan to take are offered at the host institution and available to you.
Your faculty at UiO will send you the Learning Agreement by email prior to departure. The Learning Agreement must be signed by you, the agreement coordinator at UiO, and your host institution.
If you make changes in the course selection you must update the Learning Agreement and get the changes approved by UiO.
Equal opportunities - additional support
Erasmus+ aims to offer equal opportunities for all. This means that some students may receive additional funding of 250 EUR per month to facilitate their exchange. The eligible categories are:
1 |
Students with long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments |
2 |
Students with refugee status |
3 |
Students with children, or students who are the primary caregiver of younger siblings, elderly family members and/or family members with serious mental and/or physical illness or addiction |
4 |
First generation students whose parents or older siblings did not complete higher education |
5 |
Students who belong to the indigenous people of Norway, or one of the national minority groups (Forest Finns, Jews, Kven/Norwegian Finns, Roma, and Romani/Taters) |
Due to data privacy and protection we ask that you do not send sensitive information by email.
Grant payments
The Erasmus grant is meant to cover some of the extra costs related to studying abroad, but is not meant to finance the semester in full. The grant amount is based on your destination and the duration of your semester.
How much can I receive?
For the academic year 2024-2025:
- € 530 per month for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Sweden
- € 470 per month for all other programme countries
Your grant is based on the duration of your stay:
- Start date: the first day you are required to be present at the host institution, for example first day of class or a welcome event.
- End date: the last day you are required to be present at the host institution, for example last day of exams.
The host institution must confirm the start and end date. If you travel to the host country earlier than required, for a language course or similar, you will not receive grant support for this period. This also applies if you decide to stay in the host country after the confirmed end date.
For the academic year 2024/2025, a travel grant is allocated to all students based on travel distance and mode of transportation. See examples below.

How and when will I receive the grant?
As a rule, the grant is paid in two instalments:
- 70% is paid at the start of the exchange semester.
- 30% is paid after your exchange is completed and the final report is submitted.
Note that the grant is paid through the UiO salary system. The amount will be marked as salary, and UiO will automatically collect your electronic tax card. UiO will transfer the amount in NOK to your Norwegian bank account. You are responsible for covering potential transaction costs, for example related to an account abroad.
UiO receives EU funding per academic year. If you plan to exchange for a full year, from spring semester to autumn semester, you will receive support for one semester at a time.
What if I cancel the exchange?
If you decide to withdraw from the exchange semester before two months have passed, you will have to pay back the grant in full. If you withdraw after two months, you keep an amount equal to the period you completed. It is important that you notify the Erasmus team and the relevant faculty or institute at UiO.
If you have to cancel the exchange due to illness, you can apply to keep all or parts of the grant. You must document the illness with a note from your GP.
Contact utveksling@uio.no if this is the case, but do not send sensitive information.
Confirmation from host institution
The host institution must sign a confirmation as soon as possible after your arrival in order to confirm the duration of the exchange semester.

You are required to submit a report upon your return. You will receive an email from EU Survey after the confirmed end date of your exchange semester.
