The most important thing to remember is that you must store and process files and data the correct place. It is not enough to have a secure copy of your files somewhere. You must also be sure that all processing of personal data is done on approved equipment. This is done in three steps:
- Answer the question: What type of information, files and data do you usually process?
- Find out what information class applies to this information. See examples below.
- Look up the storage guide and follow the rules.

Be especially attentive
- when you change studies and start processing other types of data
- when you are using your private laptop for UiO data
- when you share data and files with others. Ensure that the data no one should have access to has the right form of access control.
Examples of information in different classes
Open (Green)
- things you want to share with the Internet
Restricted (Yellow)
- assignments you do not want to share with others
- data files from the lab course
- your master thesis, unless it contains sensitive personal information (which means that the information belongs in the red category)
- lists of the people you invite to parties
- your job application
- your CV
- overview of your study group's phone numbers
- exam papers
In confidence (Red)
- research data containing large amounts of (regular) personal data
- research data containing sensitive personal information
- interviews of people in connection with studies
- pictures of people attending meetings in student associations (you need consent)
- lists of people charged in criminal cases
Strictly in confidence (black)
- research data that requires extra protection, for example interviews with people with hidden identities
- larger amounts of health information
