You need to register at one of the SiO receptions in order to use the computer network in your room. Please note that not all Student Halls of Residence are connected to the computer network yet. Take a look here to see if your room is connected to the computer network.
Those who live at Blindern Dormitories (Blindern Studenterhjem) must order a network connection through the administration at the Dormitories.
Necessary equipment
You have to acquire all necessary equipment in order to connect to the Student Residence Network yourself. You will need:
A user account at UiO (provided by your institute/faculty). If you attend another educational institution you can get a user account from the SiO reception when you register (1).
A computer running Windows XP (or newer), MacOSX (10.3.x or newer), or Linux.
A TP compatible Ethernet/Network adapter/card.
A TP cable ("network cable") to be used between your computer and the wall outlet. Please note that the cable must be UTP CAT 5/5e/6 (no crossover, not shielded).
Because the network is mainly considered a supplement to the computer rooms at the university (see the IT regulations and "resource economy"), there are certain restrictions to the Student Residence Network. The Student Residence Network is therefore not to be compared to a broadband connection from a regular ISP.
However, some restrictions apply:
The UDP protocol is blocked on the way into the Student Residence Network. This affects most A/V communication software and online games.
The Student Residence Network utilise DHCP for maintaining IP addresses. This means that no one will get a permanent IP address.
Your computer will not be directly accessible from outside the UiO network. This means that web pages, documents, and files you are sharing with other students on the Residence Network will be inaccessible to people outside the UiO network. This also applies to those who want to run their own web server. We would also like to remind you that sharing of copyrighted material (via BitTorrent, Kazaa, DirectConnect etc.) is strictly prohibited on the Student Residence Network.
