How to find the headers in an email

An e-mail contains a lot more headers than what your e-mail program of choice usually displays. In these headers you can find a lot of useful information about the origin of the e-mail. The following guides show how to find all the headers for the different types of email providers.

Webmail (OWA)

  • Click on the e-mail that you wish to show the headers for and click on three dots on the top right corner (next to Reply, Reply all and Forward).

  • Click on "view message details" in the dropdown menu.

  • ? The "message details" window is opened and you can read and copy the headers and paste them into a document or an e-mail.

Thunderbird

Windows

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Open the menu in Thunderbird in the upper righthand corner.

  3. Click on?View > Headers > All.

  4. Forward the email. The email should now contain all the headers.
  5. Turn off viewing of all headers by clicking?View > Headers > Normal in the menu in the top righthand corner.

Mac

  1. Choose the message you wish to find a heading for in Thunderbird.

  2. From the top menu, choose?View > Headers > All.

  3. Forward the email. It should now contain all headers.

  4. Turn off viewing of all headers by clicking?View > Headers > Normal.

Pine

  • In order to see all the headers in a message, click "h".

  • Show all headers as explained above. Forward the e-mail by clicking "F". Pine will then ask you if you wish to forward the e-mail as an attachment. Answer yes.

Outlook

  • Outlook 2010?or newer

Windows

  1. Open the message in a separate window by double-clicking on the message from the message list.
  2. Click on??File??and then??Properties?.
  3. Headers are shown in the ?Internet headers?.Open the needed email and click on the File optionClick on the Properties button

  • Outlook 2010: Select or open an email. Choose??More??and then??Forward as Attachment?.
    NB! Outlook 2016 deletes some of the headers when done this way, so it's better to copy all the headers into an email.

    Mac

    1. In the email list, right-click on the message.
    2. In the drop-down menu, click on??View Source?. A text document containing all the headers from the email should pop up.
