Thunderbird: My email has been migrated

This article shows you what happens to Thunderbird when your mailbox has been migrated to Microsoft 365.

When your e-mail and calendar have been moved from the local e-mail and calendar server to Microsoft 365, Thunderbird will notify you that it failed to refresh your inbox.

You will now have to delete your old email and calendar configuration, and set it up again to connect to Microsoft 365.

Remove old email setup for Exchange

You now need to delete the setup for incoming and outgoing email in Thunderbird and enter new settings:

  1. Go to Account Settings, select the entry for incoming email to your UiO account, and choose Remove Account.

  2. Quit Thunderbird, and start it again.

Enter new email settings 

  1. Start Thunderbird and enter:
  • Your full name
  • Your e-mail address in the form brukernavn@uio.no
  • Your UiO password

  1. Then click on Configure manually.
  • The protocol for getting email is IMAP.
  • Server hostname is outlook.office365.com with port 143.
  • Connection security is STARTTLS.
  • Authentication method must be set to OAuth2.
  • Enter your username@uio.no in the Username field.

To be able to send e-mail, you must specify an outgoing e-mail server.

  • Enter smtp.office365.com in Server hostname, with port 587.
  • STARTTLS as Connection Security.
  • Authentication method is OAuth2.
  • Enter your username@uio.no in the Username field.

Press the Re-test button to test the setup and finish with Done.

  1. You will now be asked to enter your password in https://adfs.uhad.no:

  1. Do the two-factor authentication with your preferred app:

Add signature to outgoing email

  • Click Add a signature in the Account Setup window.
  • Enter the desired signature in the Signature text field.
  • Close the window to save the outgoing email signature.
