Setting up MS365 for Linux

The guide shows how you, as a Linux user, can access Microsoft 365 through Online Accounts in Gnome.

Follow these steps to set up a Microsoft 365 (MS365) account in GNOME Online Accounts to integrate email, calendar, contacts, and files.

Prerequisites

We recommend that you use the latest GNOME environment.

For full email and calendar integration, you may need to install the Exchange Web Services (EWS) support package, which is evolution-ews on many distributions (e.g. sudo apt install evolution-ews on Ubuntu/Debian, or similar commands for other distributions).

Step-by-step setup

Go to Settings, and navigate to Online Accounts in the left sidebar.

Select the Microsoft 365 option from the list of available account types. Then click the Sign in... button.

Some of us have multiple accounts in Microsoft 365, and you will be asked to select an account. Click on the account you want to log in with.

You will now be taken to UiO's authentication service Weblogin, where you enter your username (without @uio.no) and password. Check the box for Remember me for fewer authentications. Then click Log in.

Complete the multi-factor authentication (MFA) in your preferred way.

Confirm that you are trying to log in to Gnome by clicking Continue.

You are now authenticated. Select which services you want enabled: Email, Calendar, Contacts and/or Files.

Then close the window.

NOTE! If you select Email, Calendar and/or Contacts, this data will be synchronized between your computer and Microsoft 365. If you activate the Files option, OneDrive will be connected as a traditional file share. This means that you work directly on the file in OneDrive and that no synchronization takes place here.

Congratulations! You have now set up an online account for Microsoft 365.

Troubleshooting

  • For calendar/email not showing issues, make sure evolution-ews is installed and enabled.
