Updates in Windows

With Windows, ongoing updates and upgrades of Windows are offered. Read more on Microsoft's website.

There are 2 types of updates with Windows.?Read more on Microsoft's website.

1.?Windows quality update

Is an incremental update of Windows products that contains bug fixes and security problem fixes, but not new features.

Windows Quality Update is rolled out monthly, also known as Patch Tuesday, and is mandatory for all Intune machines. The machine gives a notification?when it is ready for updating and gives the user the opportunity to control the process, with a 3-day deadline.

2. Windows Feature Update

An update that contains new features. A feature update also includes all previous quality updates, as needed.

This update is a new operating system, i.e. a new version of Windows.
The machine will give a warning and the update looks like a normal?quality update.

How often does a new version of Windows come out and what enforcements are used?

“My UiO?PC” machines at UiO use the General Availability Channel.
This means that a new feature update is released annually.

Note: For all updates, a deferral, deadline, and grace period are set.

Deferral is the time from when Microsoft releases the update until we release it further.
Deadline is the time before the update begins installing automatically.
Grace period is the time from the deadline until the device restarts automatically.

For Quality updates, these are set to:
Deferral: 2 days
Deadline: 2 days
Grace period: 3 days

Note: Not all Quality updates require a restart.

For Feature updates, these are set to:
Deferral: 90 days
Deadline: 10 days
Grace period: 3 days

Note: If the enforcement times are not met, the device will automatically catch up on them the next time it is turned on. Which means that a machine that has passed all three enforcements will request a restart almost immediately after the update has been installed.
