My UiO PC: VPN

Note:

This guide only applies to UiO-owned and -operated PCs within the concept of 'My UiO-PC'.

Students and others with private computers or different platforms can find assistance in the guides linked on the UiO web page about VPN.

Some of UiO's IT services are only available while you are on UiO's computer network. Intune devices are installed with VPN, so you can easily access such closed services even when you are not at UiO.

About UiO's VPN solution for My UiO PC

  • Based on Cisco VPN
  • Custom VPN solution exclusive for My UiO PC devices
  • Automatically installed on all Intune devices
  • The Cisco VPN client must be started manually by the user the first time the computer is set up. After this the client will start automatically during boot up

What requires VPN at UiO

  • Home directory and shared volumes that is stored on UiO servers (kant.uio.no, hume.uio.no)
  • Software that requires a UiO IP address or connection. 
  • Lagringshotell.uio.no
  • Vortex-opptak-01.uio.no - to save recordings of lectures
  • Ephorte

Questions & Answers about the VPN solution

Is it safe to use this VPN solution?

Yes. The VPN solution is built on a safe and robust solution. A risk assessment analysis has also been carried out, and the IT security group has also done quality assurance assessment.

Does all network traffic go through the VPN tunnel?

No. The traffic that goes through the VPN tunnel is explicitly for the services UiO has opened for.

Example 1: If one is working from home and connects to their home directory or connects to http://vortex-opptak01.uio.no in their browser, this traffic goes through UiO's VPN solution. 

Example 2: If one is working from home and connects to http://fhi.no in their browser, then this traffic will NOT go through UiO's VPN solution.
