Mac security requirements

There has been a general increase in IT threats in recent years. This also affects the Mac platform to a greater extent than before, and Apple has therefore had an increasing focus on security on the platform. This has made MacOS a very secure platform, but it is still necessary for us as an institution, and for users to be aware of possible threats, and make the right choices to ensure basic security. Therefore, the following requirements apply to all UiO-owned Mac Clients.

All Mac clients:

  • Must be registered in UiO's operating platform, Workspace One
    (formerly known as Airwatch)
    • Machines with "special needs" must also be registered in the operating plan, but can be exempted for "active operation".
  • Must be running a supported version of macOS.
    • UiO has support for the latest version, as well as the two previous versions*
  • Must have System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled.
    • Machines running with SIP disabled over time may be blocked.**
  • Single-user Macs must have FileVault encryption enabled on disk.
    • Multi-user machines can run without FileVault enabled, but these are not approved for storing red data.

   * Supported MacOS versions are as of today; MacOS 11, MacOS 12 and MacOS 13.
MacOS 11 will be phased out from November 23, when MacOS 14 Sonoma is launched.
If a Mac is so old that it cannot run a supported system version, it must no longer be used on UiO's network.
** Users will be informed via email before any blocking takes place.
