In May and June we went on a tour at UiO with life science information meetings.

We wanted to inform researchers at all the faculties about the upcoming process where they could apply for funding of research groups with collaboration across conventional disciplinary boundaries – so called convergence environments. We also wanted to get input on the process. The tour marked the start of the implementation of the UiO Life Science Strategy.

In June all was set for a virtual 3D tour in the planned life sciences building at UiO.

Since then several people have “visited” the building, among others LO President Gerd Kristiansen and NHO Director General Kristin Skogen Lund during a summit at UiO in August.

The life sciences building will be Norway’s largest building for research, education and innovation. It shall contribute to value creation and give Norway increased competitiveness in life sciences. It will be a resource for the whole Oslo region.

The building will be erected in Gaustadbekkdalen and is planned for completion in 2023.

Until then you may join a virtual 3D tour in the life sciences building.

The building contractor Statsbygg handed the pre-project over to the Ministry of Education and Research this summer. The Quality assurance of the management base and cost estimates before the project is submitted to Parliament for approval and funding (QA2) started in August and is to be finished till Christmas.

In September we organized workshops with speed dating for the researchers at UiO who wanted to apply for funding for convergence environments.

Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that will solve grand challenges related to health and environment. The purpose of the workshops was to get researchers to meet across disciplines.

To be a part of the application process they had to submit a project sketch by the end of October. An international expert panel is evaluating the 31 project sketches that we received.

When the expert panel has finished the evaluation within December 15th the call for a full project proposal will be out. The application deadline will be March 1st 2017.

In September we helped the students at UiO who were to participate in the international competition in synthetic biology – iGEM – to print the Norwegian version of the comic "Adventures in synthetic biology".

With this comic this year?s team wants to get more students from different disciplines to get insight into synthetic biology and maybe participate in the competition the coming years.

When the students from UiO participated in the iGEM competition in the end of October, they received a gold medal for their work. They have combined traditional molecular biology with app design, 3D printing and innovative thinking to detect antibiotic resistance in a simple way. The aim is to avoid overuse of antibiotics and thereby reduce the spreading of the resistance genes.
