Inspirational talk

Tonje S?raas Birkenes, PhD, ??Principal Scientist, Laerdal Medical
More about the speaker, the company and the talk?
Tonje S?raas Birkenes is a Principal Scientist at Laerdal Medical, with a PhD from the University of Oslo and over 15 years of research experience in Telephone-CPR and emergency communication.?
She will share Laerdal’s remarkable journey from a small Stavanger toy company in 1940 to a global leader in lifesaving technology and simulation, a transformation built on strong partnerships with clinicians, researchers and academic institutions. Tonje will also highlight Laerdal’s deep commitment to the mission “helping save lives”. Through long-term collaborations with global partners, Laerdal has developed high-impact, low-cost solutions that strengthen care during childbirth and emergencies, contributing to major improvements in newborn and maternal survival in resource-limited settings.
Drawing on her own path from academia to industry, Tonje reflects on what it means to work as a scientific researcher in a mission-driven company—where evidence, technology and real-world collaboration come together to solve critical problems. She will share personal insights from leading innovation projects such as AI-supported emergency dispatch, illustrating how cross-sector partnerships accelerate progress and create solutions that truly meet the needs of patients, providers and society.

About the innovation hangouts
This is an informal meeting place where students and researchers from the University of Oslo (UiO) can interact with actors from the public sector, hospitals, companies, mentors, business clusters and incubators within UiO's innovation ecosystem. We will provide inspirational talks, talks from role models, matchmaking, food and beverages, and mingling.
The overall goal of the UiO Growth House is to strengthen the innovation culture at UiO to put more knowledge from research to use. With this meeting place, we want to inspire researchers and students, give them self-confidence and knowledge about the innovation process, help them build networks, and facilitate collaboration between academia and industry.
The UiO Growth House established the innovation hangouts in collaboration with clusters in 2022. The events are arranged quarterly in the afternoon/evening.
