Centre for Development and the Environment

The Centre for Development and the Environment operated at the University of Oslo from 1990 to 2025.
Over the course of 35 years, SUM developed strong research expertise in areas such as development policy, global health, global governance and international politics, rural transformation, energy justice and sustainable consumption.
SUM was dissolved as an independent centre in 2025, but its staff, research groups, projects, and study programmes have become part of the new Centre for Global Sustainability.
Research projects
The Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) carried out a number of research projects, including prestigious international projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, the European Research Council and NORAD among others.
Publications
SUM contributed significant insights into a wide array of topics related to development and the environment.
