Brief encounter with Steinar Holden

– Many economic issues are both intellectually demanding and have significant consequences for people's well-being. Therefore, I would like to contribute with analyses and proposals that I believe are good solutions, says Steinar Holden, who is a professor at the Department of Economics.

– What are you currently preoccupied with?

– I have started revising my textbook in macroeconomics, which is used here at UiO and at some other universities and colleges. The book was written in 2016, and since then many things have happened that should be included in the book. I have also received many good suggestions on how the book can be improved.

– If you had to explain to an eight-year-old what you do at work in three short sentences, what would you say?

– I study how the economy in society works – how many people have a job, whether incomes are increasing, whether the prices of goods in stores are rising.

– I also study what can be done to make the economy work better, so that more people can get jobs without prices rising further. And I teach university students, who are learning about how the economy works.

– What motivates you at work?

– There are many things. I like to learn more about issues that interest me. Many economic issues are both intellectually demanding and have great significance for people's well-being. Therefore, I would like to contribute with analyses and proposals that I believe are good solutions.

–  It is also motivating to discuss and work together with skilled colleagues. Additionally, I enjoy teaching engaged students.

– If you were to become something completely different, what could it be?

– I think I would also be satisfied as an economist in the public administration, for example, in a ministry. If I were to choose a completely different field, I think it might have been law.

– What do you do when you completely unwind?

– I like to read good books. I also enjoy walking in nature, preferably skiing when possible, or other physical activities. Spending time with family and friends is also important.
