Leadership at the Faculty

We are in the process of conducting a Management Development Program at the Faculty. The program is held for everyone with management responsibilities at the Faculty and will last until the end of 2019.

The program consists of four components:

  • Developing the management groups at the Faculty
  • How to connect different levels and units focusing on the responsibilities and tasks that lies on the department managers
  • Different forums for discussions and understanding of the management role in academia
  • A Thematic Management Lab for all participants in the program

Management team development

The program focuses particularly on the development of the many management teams at the Faculty: the Faculty Management Team, the Department Management Team, the Faculty Director’s Management Team, the Head of Department Management Team and Educational Leaders.

Connecting different levels and units

This component focuses on the role of a Head of Department and exchange experiences across different Departments and units at the Faculty. The nine Heads of Departments are separated into three groups with three participants in each group. The Heads of Departments will also gather for joint group development sessions.

The management role in academia

The free independent thought is strong and must stay strong in academia. That does not mean that we don’t need management, on the contrary. An important part of management is to secure the free independent thought, but the management role includes more skills. A manager needs to have a good understanding of the system in order to contribute to the whole and to have excellent collaboration skills in different areas, to mention a few. In order to contribute, the program will provide forums where these skills will be discussed in groups.

Management Lab

The fourth component of the program is a Management Lab held monthly starting on 31 August 2018. This is a series of seminars about management and is held in collaboration with Institutt for medskapende ledelse (IML). The themes this fall will be:

  • Four communication styles you should know as a leader (31 August)
  • Conflict – when to act and and with what means (21 September)
  • Implementation of strategy – how do I work with this (26 October)
  • Change management – required and chosen changes (31 November)

The Faculty’s strategy process

Simultaneously with the Management Developing Program, we are in the process of writing a new strategy for the Faculty. The original plan was to have a draft ready in May. We did not make that deadline. However, we are planning to have the draft ready and sent to all employees during August. In accordance with the Heads of Departments, the strategy hearing will take place after study start this fall, which means in September.

And lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a NICE SUMMER HOLIDAY!
